Letters are everywhere. At their core, they form the foundation of everything we want to express, record and share. In a world where we unconsciously read vast quantities of text every day, letters are primarily approached as functional tools.
Deconstruction of Type explores typography as a visual and spatial system rather than as a
carrier of language. The visual language of the work is inspired by Bauhaus and Constructivist typography, where reduction, geometry and modularity are central principles. The work consists of 24 geometric building blocks, created by deconstructing custom-designed letterforms (inspired by Fjellgen, a typeface I designed earlier) into their essential elements. From 2D to 3D. Together, these elements form a modular system capable of constructing the entire lowercase alphabet and a wide range of other typographic forms. Within this system, meaning is not fixed; it emerges through combination, position and spatial relationships.
In this context, typography reveals how quickly we recognize forms as language and what happens when that process is disrupted. As you move through the installation, you navigate a landscape of letterforms. Typography shifts from reading to seeing. At what point do we still perceive a shape? And when do we begin to read?
What happens when letters are no longer read, but observed? And how does our perception of typography change when we move through it?
